What Is DarkStudio?
DarkStudio is a new DAW built from the ground up in C++, with a focus on sound quality and workflow speed. Based on the official description, it's designed to handle recording, editing, mixing, and mastering all within one streamlined workflow.
What's interesting is that DarkStudio comes from the same team behind the Dark plugin series, so there's a kind of "common thread" between the plugins and the DAW itself — it'll likely feel more cohesive when used together.
Key Features
A few features that stand out in this beta version:
- Full MixConsole — with inserts, sends, EQ, and metering
- GuardEngine — anticipative processing designed to keep sessions responsive even at low buffer sizes with heavy plugin chains
- Warp / time-stretch and comping with take lanes
- Piano roll with a drum editor, CC lanes, and groove quantize
- ARA 2 / Melodyne integration with full session recall
- Control Room — cue mixes, talkback, AFL/PFL listen bus
- VST3/AU hosting with plugin delay compensation and out-of-process plugin scanning
- DAWproject import/export, so projects from other DAWs can be opened here
- Available for both Windows and macOS (Universal Binary)
Looking at the feature list, this clearly isn't a half-hearted side project — it's fairly complete for a DAW that just entered beta.
First Impressions
I've had a chance to try it out a bit, and you can really tell how much thought went into the development. The interface is clean and no-nonsense, and the workflow feels familiar enough if you're used to other DAWs. Since it's still in beta, there are naturally a few things that still need polishing — but the foundation already shows a lot of potential.
If you're looking for a DAW alternative outside the usual options, DarkStudio is worth trying, especially while it's still free during the beta period.
How to Download
For now, DarkStudio 1.1 Beta is available as a free download on Maniac Audio's official page:

If you run into any bugs while using it, the developer is fairly responsive when contacted directly — so don't hesitate to send feedback, since the official release is reportedly coming in about a month.
